It was a special meeting at the Fast Friday's Motorcycle Speedway on the Fourth of July. It is always special when the Extreme Sidecars return to Auburn Ca. and Fast Fridays. This was their third appearance of the season, and the house was packed. The races got off an hour earlier than usual and were presented along with a fireworks display provided the by the City of Auburn and the Gold Country Fairgrounds at the conclusion of the races.
It was an epic night with the stands filled to near capacity for the return of the sidecars and speedway racing was also outstanding. The fans, many dressed in patriotic clothing celebrated the fourth starting with a outstanding rendition of the national anthem sung by Shieann Yates. Then the races began on a beautiful summer evening.
The Extreme Sidecars ran three heats then the main event. In the first race a mishap sent two of the sidecars to the pits broken after hitting the wall. Tiffiny Leppien, who was riding with Jason Fritze was injured and was unable to continue. Emergency personnel attended to her, but she was out for the evening. The sidecar team of Peter Konrad and Bryan Morrison who were also involved in the crash, damaged their bike also could not continue. They were also out of program the rest of the evening. The accident left just three of the five teams who carried on and put on a great show.
Joe Jones and Johnny Glover won the main event followed by the team Wade Boyd and Eric Lindauer in second place. Robert Curry and Michael McGovern were awarded third place after McGovern fell off the bike on the third lap. Jones and Glover won the first heat race, were second behind Curry and McGovern in the second heat and third heat races then put it together to win the night's finale in the sidecar main event. Curry and McGovern led off the line with Jones and Glover close behind but they got in trouble coming to close to the track tube and McGovern fell off as they nearly came into the infield. Jones and Glover took the lead for the finish. Great job by all the sidecars teams.
In the speedway racing portion of the evening Alex Martin, in his first trip to Fast Fridays this season, had a stunning night. Martin was unbeaten in both the handicap program and the scratch program winning every time he rolled on the track. Martin broke into the winner's circle in the scratch program winning the main event. Until Friday night only Billy Janniro and Broc Nicol had won the scratch main events at Fast Fridays until Martin pulled into town. Janniro was second in the main event, Darren Armbruster was third and Danny Faria was fourth.
Martin was also the winner of the handicap main event picking up the first double-double wins of the season meaning he won both the scratch main event and the handicap main event. Handicapped on the 10-yard line he scored wins in all his heat races and the main. Darren Armbruster, also starting on the 10-yard line, was second and Billy Janniro handicapped on the 30-yard line just could not make up the difference and had to settle for third place.
Antonio Coffman was first in the support main event. Coffman also had a perfect night with wins in his heat races and the support main event. In the main event Tim Dion in second and Brian Leventon in third. Coffman did double duty also riding in the Division 1 program.
After finishing in second place five times so far this season in the Youth 250cc D1 main events, Wesley Rearick picked up his first main event win in the Youth 250cc class Friday night. Rearick finished third in his two heat races before the main event when he put it together for the win staying ahead of Jameson Hutchinson and Caden Cavrikas beating them to the finishing line. Hutchinson finished second and Cavrikas was third.
In the Youth 250cc D2 main event and Baylee Evans Seeley picked up her first main event win of the season. First and second in her heat races she finished first ahead of Gracie Janniro who was second and Justin Gist who finished third in the main event.
Also, visiting Fast Fridays for just the third time this season Hudson Jones, son of sidecar champion Joe Jones, took the Youth 150cc D1 main event. Jones aced his heat races then on to the main event where Zander Schroeder and Brady Wills gave him a real challenge until he was able to pull away for the win in the final laps. Wills was second and Schroeder was third in the main event. Mason Howell won the Youth 150cc D2 main event, Gavin Evans Seeley was second and Leeann Emerson was third. William Bruce picked up his second main event win of the season in Youth 150cc D3 class. Ryder Faria was second and Zeva Schroeder was third. Faria led for most of the race, but Bruce caught Faria at the finish line for a near photo finish.
It was a great night of racing at Fast Friday's and combined with a great celebration of America's 249th birthday, the evening could not have been better. Heads up for next week when the Team Challenge continues with round four. Team Law Tigers leads Team IFC by a slim margin of 28-26 so the challenge is still very tight. Fast Fridays, “The place to be on Friday nights.”
